(1) 대주제 : Politics of Difference
As the world becomes interconnected on an unprecedented scale, political participants are inevitably exposed to surroundings that facilitate interaction amongst actors of different backgrounds. Be it cultural, economic, or gender differences, it has become increasingly clear that the political dynamics concerning these differences – i.e. politics of difference, will be the crucial issue of this generation. Are there differences that simply cannot be reconciled? Or, will we overcome our differences and be able to build a society fit for the global age?
(2) 소주제 – 문화(culture), 경제(economy), 젠더(gender)
Ⅰ. 문화(culture)
Our societies are becoming more and more multicultural in ways the world has never seen. Due to burgeoning metropolises in East Asia, multicultural conflicts have become prominent. Therefore, we need to understand this particular issue thoroughly by addressing the following questions: What is culture? Why is culture so important to us? Do we distinguish ‘good’ from ‘bad’ culture?
If so, what are the criteria? Are those criteria reasonable? What are the different interests related to this problem and how are they reflected in today’s politics? And lastly, what is the best way to deal with cultural differences?
Ⅱ. 경제(economy)
Differences in economic background have been widespread and growing with economic growth and social expansion. Economic inequality, in particular, is evident on both the domestic and international fronts, emphasizing the urgency of the issue. Is welfare policy a justifiable way to deal with the inequality issues? Is it legitimate to raise the rate of progressive income tax? What would be an effective way to implement government support and promote social cohesion? How can governments deal with the conflicts and collateral damages inherent to distributive issues? Is international aid an obligation for developed countries? What are the ways to invigorate the ODA, or are there alternatives?
Ⅲ. 젠더(gender)
Gender, together with the political dynamics concerning it, is a major topic of discussion across the world today. Why have gender issues gained such media attention in the 21st-century? Who defines gender and how are gender roles reinforced in our societies? What gender issues are unique to East Asia? In the eyes of gender differences, what are possible solutions for decreasing fertility rates, if this is a problem at all? What aspects need to be considered to enhance the status of women in our society? How should we prepare ourselves to celebrate the diversity of gender?
